The shipbuilding gantry crane is a special lifting device used in shipyards on docks, berths or platforms for lifting and turning hull sections. Its characteristics are large lifting capacity, wide span, and great height. The rated lifting capacity is at least 100 t and can reach up to 2500 t; the span is generally greater than 40 m and can reach approximately 230 m; the height from the ground to the lower cover plate of the main girder is between 40 m and 200 m.

 

Massive gantry structure: To accommodate large spans, the gantry usually adopts a special structure with a rigid leg on one side and a flexible leg on the other. The rigid leg is fixedly connected to the main girder to provide stable support, while the flexible leg is connected via a hinged joint, effectively absorbing stresses caused by large spans and ambient temperature changes, ensuring safe and smooth operation. The main girder can be of single‑girder or double‑girder type according to requirements.

 

Cooperative operation of upper and lower trolleys: This is the core configuration of a shipbuilding gantry crane and the key to completing complex lifting tasks.

 

Upper trolley: Usually located on the top flange rail of the bridge, equipped with two main hooks of equal lifting capacity. The lifting points can extend beyond the outer side of the main girder. The hooks can operate independently or together for twin‑hook tandem lifting. The twin hooks are also equipped with a traversing mechanism, allowing micro‑rotation of the hull section in the air to achieve millimeter‑level precision during assembly.

 

Lower trolley: Runs on the bottom flange rail of the bridge and can pass under the upper trolley. It is usually equipped with one main hook and one auxiliary hook. The main hook can lift alone or combine with the two main hooks of the upper trolley to achieve “three‑hook tandem lifting” or to complete the extremely difficult overall turning of a hull section in the air. The auxiliary hook is used for lifting small components.

 

Advanced drive and control: The entire crane adopts full frequency drive and PLC centralized control, enabling precise single‑action, linkage, and synchronised tandem lifting of each mechanism. To accommodate long‑span travel, the crane is also equipped with an anti‑skew device for the crane and trolley travel, which can detect and correct skew in real time, preventing rail gnawing and ensuring safe operation over long spans.

4.Versatile operation: The equipment is typically required to have various operation modes such as single lifting, two‑hook tandem lifting, three‑hook tandem lifting, in‑air turning, and micro‑rotation, to precisely complete section assembly.

 

5.Safety redundancy: Given the critical importance of the operation, the crane is usually equipped with safety features such as dual braking systems, rail clamps, anemometers, anti‑skew devices, etc. Some advanced equipment also features cutting‑edge functions such as AI anti‑sway, anti‑collision, and IoT remote monitoring.
