A bulk cargo ship unloader is an efficient mechanical device specially designed for loading and unloading bulk materials. Its structural design is complex and refined to meet the requirements of fast, safe and efficient operation.

 

The boom system is one of the core components of a grab ship unloader, responsible for providing sufficient working range. The boom is typically made of high‑strength steel, offering good rigidity and stability to ensure no deformation or swaying during large‑amplitude movement. The boom is connected to the machine body by hinges and can be luffed by hydraulic or electric drive.

 

The grab device is the component that directly contacts the cargo. Depending on the type of cargo (e.g., coal, ore, grain, etc.), different types of grabs can be selected, such as double‑rope grabs or multi‑petal grabs. The design of the grab must consider not only its grabbing efficiency but also ensure that the cargo does not spill during lifting. Grabs are usually equipped with an automatic opening/closing mechanism, controlled by wire ropes or hydraulic cylinders.

 

The hoisting mechanism is responsible for lifting and lowering the grab, and includes components such as winches, wire ropes, and sheave blocks.

 

The travel mechanism enables the whole machine to move on rails, thereby covering the entire length of the wharf and reaching different positions of the ship. The travel mechanism is usually driven by electric motors combined with gear transmission systems to achieve smooth and fast movement. In addition, to ensure stability and safety of the equipment on the rails, the travel mechanism is equipped with anti‑slip devices and limit switches.

 

Main structural components:

 

Metal structure: Composed of the gantry frame, main girders, front and rear booms, etc., forming the skeleton of the machine.

 

Hoisting / closing mechanism: The core that controls the lifting/lowering and opening/closing of the grab, directly determining operational efficiency.

 

Trolley travel mechanism: Drives the grab to move horizontally along the main girders.

 

Crane travel mechanism: Drives the entire machine longitudinally along the wharf rails.

 

Luffing mechanism: Used to adjust the angle of the front boom during operation to avoid the ship’s hatch structures.

 

Electrical control system: The brain of the machine, usually using PLC and variable frequency drive control.

 

Auxiliary and safety devices: Including hydraulic tensioning devices, overload limiters, typhoon anchoring devices, various limit switches, anemometers, etc.

 

Main application scenarios

 

Specialised bulk cargo terminals: Handling bulk dry cargo such as coal and iron ore.

 

Thermal power plants: Receiving coal to ensure power generation.

 

Steel enterprises: Unloading raw materials such as iron ore needed for blast furnaces.

 

Grain and cement terminals: Professional handling of wheat, soybeans, fertilisers, cement, and other goods.

 

Other uses: Can also be used for multi‑purpose loading/unloading at ports, offering “one machine for multiple uses” capability.
